Rejuvenate your Heat-Scorched Lawn with Good Nature

If you live in the Midwest, it will be no surprise to you that this summer was a scorcher. When the weather is as hot as it was last season, it can wreak havoc on your lawn. If your lawn looks haggard and worn out from the hot summer, all hope is not lost; all you need to do is follow these simple guidelines and your grass will be back to looking beautiful in no time.

Determine the status of your lawn

Even though your lawn may look brown and lifeless, that might not be the case. There is a good chance that it is just dormant. Many types of grass simply go dormant and stop growing as a way of dealing with the stress that extreme heat can cause. However, if your lawn does not return to its lush green state, even though it has been exposed to water either from rain or your own hard work, it is possible that it is dead.

If your lawn is full of brown spots or bare patches, the easiest way to rejuvenate it is to reseed it. Reseeding is fast, effective, and inexpensive. So, there is no reason to delay if your lawn needs a facelift. Reseeding your lawn takes just three simple steps:

  • Mow your lawn short
  • Apply seed and fertilizer
  • Water daily until the grass reaches two inches in height

There may be times when the affected area is too large for reseeding to be an adequate fix, as In these cases, you should consider aerating the lawn. Aerating the lawn will loosen the compacted soil and allow the water to seep down into the roots. Not only will the established grass roots be able to grow, but newly planted seeds will be able to take root as well.

Other actions to take

Although reseeding and aerating are important steps to take to rejuvenate your lawn, they are not the only steps you can take. Some other ways you can bring your dead or dormant lawn back to life include:

  • Dethatch to help the lawn absorb water
  • Refrain from bagging lawn clippings
  • Keep off the lawn as much as possible
  • Water the lawn as much as possible
  • Spread lawn fertilizer
  • Kill weeds
  • Keep up with regular lawn maintenance
